SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) Vinyl has a rigid core which gives it more durability and makes it 100% waterproof. Vinyl also offers different options for installation, such as click, loose lay or dryback.
Laminate is typically made with MDF or HDF that gets covered in a photographic layer and then sealed with protective laminate. This makes it more scratch resistant than vinyl but only water resistant.
All in all, pick what suites your needs, at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference and which flooring you think will look better in your space.
Both are great options for your home that will last a lifetime and increase the value of your home.
Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of wood, cut directly from the tree. Is very durable but can be prone to expanding and contracting with temperature and humidity. Solid is typically thicker and can be sanded and refinished multiple times to restore appearance. Solid is generally more expensive but offers a traditional, timeless and natural look.
Engineered hardwood is composed of multiple layers of wood with the thin top veneer being the real hardwood. The core is typically made of plywood or HDF. It is more stable than solid wood, offering less warping and shifting over time. However, it is thinner than solid, and may only be refinished once or twice but this is generally not recommended. It is slightly more cost effective, while still offering the great style and feel of solid hardwood.
Overall, engineered is generally more popular nowadays and offers more versatility for options and installation.
There are many factors that determine scratch resistance. Generally, materials with a glossy finish will be more prone to scratching compared to a matte finish.
For vinyl, laminate and hardwood, scratch resistance is determined by the 'wear layer'.
A hardwood with a matte finish or a laminate product would have the highest scratch resistance. Although, vinyl has made strides to close the gap in recent years.
Tile is very scratch resistant as a result of the manufacturing process, even with a high gloss finish.
Many factors go into the overall durability of a product. Thickness, wear layer, material and manufacturing processes can all contribute to this.
For click SPC vinyl flooring, durability is largely contributed to thickness and wear layer.
For tiles, the material and manufacturing process will factor into durability. See the section on the difference between porcelain and ceramic for more information.
Yes. For vinyl, laminate, and hardwood the products should be left at room temperature for 24-48 before starting the installation.
Depending on the type of flooring you buy there may be different cleaning measures.
Vinyl, laminate, and hardwood should use a simple cleaning solution and a non abrasive material. Vacuuming is also safe and wont leave any marks.
For tile, it is recommended to use something non-acidic and anti-bacterial for ceramic or porcelain.
Depending on the product you buy there may be different installation procedures.
Laminate and vinyl 'click' products are the easiest and best for beginners and people who want to do it themselves.
Hardwood products should be glued and/or nailed
Tile should be set into the floor with mortar, or on the wall with a special tile adhesive.
It is best to contact an expert for any troubles or questions regarding any installation process. If you are doing it yourself there are many resources online to help learn more.
First, you will need to determine how large the space is that you want to install the products in. This is called square footage, and as you notice, a majority of items on the website are priced per square foot.
This is done by multiplying the length and width of the space. After that you can divide the total square footage by how many square feet comes in a box. This will give you a number which you can round up or down to get the total number of boxes needed.
As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to add an extra 5-10% for wastage, and having extra at the end of the job is normal.
Tile is a great flooring options for a few main reasons.
1. Tile is extremely durable
2. Easy to clean
3. Lasts a lifetime
4. Perfect for places that can get wet such as bathrooms or kitchens and high traffic areas.
5. Low maintenance, and environmentally friendly.
In general, it will come down to personal preference about which tile to install in your home. However, there are some basic guidelines you can follow to ensure you choose the best match.
1. Glossy/Polished tile is typically more popular to install on walls whereas matte is more common on the floor. The main reason for this is that glossy tiles can be very slippery when wet.
2. Porcelain tile is typically used for flooring, and ceramic is used for wall. This is not always true, but is important to keep in mind. Porcelain is stronger and more durable making it better suited for floor use. Ceramic is better suited for smaller format tiles that look great as a backsplash or shower wall.
Porcelain is a type of ceramic tile. However, porcelain is made from a specific type of clay and manufactured at a higher temperature which results in a different composition compared to ceramic. This creates a more durable and moisture resistant tile, which makes it a great choice for bathroom walls and floors.
Installing tile takes a lot more time and is harder to work with compared to other flooring options. It is recommended to consult a professional or do research through online resources before starting your project.
If you bought grout through Source Flooring then sealing is not required as ours is pre-mixed.
If you want to check your grout to see if it needs to be sealed. Drop a bead of water onto the grout and if it is quickly absorbed then it should be resealed. If the water sits on the surface then no sealant is required.
